The Oswayo Valley Memorial Library now has a 3D printer thanks to the Norton Grant! We are excited to be able to offer 3D printing as part of our services. Below is our use policy and the request form. A copy of this policy and the request form are also available at the circulation desk.
Policy on 3D Printer Use
The Oswayo Valley Memorial Library offers the community access to new and exciting technologies to inspire creativity and lifelong learning. This policy is to establish guidelines for the public use of our 3D printer.
The 3D printer will be made available to the general public for making 3D objects in plastic using a design that is uploaded from a digital computer file.
- The 3D printer may be used for lawful purposes only. Patrons are not permitted to use the printer to create objects that are:
- Prohibited by local, state, or federal law.
- In violation of another’s intellectual property. By submitting/printing content, the patron agrees to assume all responsibility for, and shall hold the library harmless in all matters related to patented, trademarked, or copyrighted materials.
- Unsafe, harmful, dangerous, or pose an immediate threat to the well-being of others; for example, guns, knives, or other possibly lethal weapons.
- Items that are obscene or deemed inappropriate for the library environment. Library staff reserves the right to determine if a print is inappropriate.
- Larger than our printing area.
- The library reserves the right to deny any 3D print request.
- The library is not responsible for any damages, loss, or security of data arising from the use of its computers or network, nor for the functionality or quality of content produced on the 3D printer.
- Only library staff may have hands-on access to the 3D printer unless otherwise stated for a program.
- The library reserves the right to charge a fee for printing of $0.10 per gram and a processing fee of $0.50.
- Items not picked up within 10 days will become the property of the Oswayo Valley Memorial Library. Items must be picked up by the individual who requested them. Any patron who does not pick up their prints will forfeit all future rights to use the 3D printer.
- It is the responsibility of the requesting patron to design their own creation and prepare it for printing in .stl file format. Library staff is available for consultation only. Designs are available from various file-sharing databases such as thingiverse.com, pinshape.com, youmagine.com, myminifactory.com.
- Designs should be loaded to a USB drive in the correct file format and will be reviewed by library staff before printing. Once the review has been completed, printing will be scheduled within a reasonable period of time. Same-day printing is not guaranteed.
- Requesting patrons are allowed one print job per day, and staff will notify the requesting patron when the job is complete.
- The requesting patron will pay for their print once it is finished and has been weighed. The requesting patron is responsible for all errors that occur during the printing process. If the object does not print correctly due to design errors, it is the responsibility of the user to pay for the object.
- The requesting patron must clean the raft and supports. Small bumps or holes and rough edges on the object may occur. These can be cleaned up with fine sandpaper or other tools and is not the responsibility of the library or staff.
- All files will be deleted from the library computer system once the print job has been completed.

While the library staff makes every effort to oversee the printing of an object, the use of the printed object upon completion is not under the direction or control of the library. The library is not responsible for any object created with the use of the 3D printer, including any harm or injury incurred as a result of the use of the printer or of the object which is printed.
Submitting a Design
- Complete a “Request to Print” form. Staff will create a hard copy for requests submitted online.
- Bring the file to the circulation desk during open hours.
- The file can be submitted on a flash drive or emailed to ovmlibrary@gmail.com.
- Staff adds the file to the printing queue and prepares the printer.
- Staff prints the item.
Claiming a Print
- The requesting patron will be notified when their completed item is ready to be picked up, along with the total due. Items must be paid for at the time of pickup.
- Items may be picked up at the circulation desk during open hours.
- Items not picked up within 10 days become the property of the Oswayo Valley Memorial Library.
